About DAN
Objectives
-
To
disseminate free information in respect of management of
diabetes to persons with diabetes and the general
public.
-
To
establish a forum where exchange of ideas amongst
persons with diabetes are discussed.
-
To
promote positively the welfare of persons with diabetes
-
To
assist in any form (either through finance or
procurement of anti-diabetes drugs for distressed
members of the association).
-
To
establish and maintain the line of communication between
the association and general public – i.e. continuous
diabetes education to the general public.
-
To
bring to the homes of all Nigerians, the devastating
effects of diabetes and how to cope with them.
-
To
establish succour
for persons with diabetes all over the state.
Membership
There
is a register of members numbering up to about 5000 but
unregistered members number more than two million in Lagos
State.

Statistics
1991
diabetes census indicated that every one of twenty persons
in urban Lagos City is either diabetic or a potential
diabetic. (Source: LUTH – Endocrine/Metabolic unit
Research – 1999)
Relationship
with Government
Presently,
no relationship with the Lagos State Government except
during the tail end of Sir Michael Otedola’s regime when
it supported the Lagos State Chapter of Diabetes Association
of Nigeria to mark the 1991 World Diabetes Day.
Projections
-
Urgently
in need of a functional and recognizable office within
the state capital.
Such office would have facilities such as
refrigerators, air-conditioners, laboratories, blood
glucose machines with lancets and test strips, urine
testing reagents, insulin, anti-diabetes drugs,
weighting scales, sphygmomanometers, examination
couches, computer gadgets, telephone, fax, filling
cabinets, furniture – tables and chairs, delivery and
PAS Fans, buses, cars, etc

Rehabilitation
of present office at the maintenance building of 1004
Housing Estate, Victoria Island.
-
Procurement
of diabetes drugs into all the State Specialist
Hospitals, health Centres
and Diabetes Association of Nigeria.
-
Establishment
of Diabetes Association of Nigeria branches in Badagry,
Epe, Ikorodu, Eti-Osa, Ojo, Ajeromi, Apapa, Agege
General hospitals.
-
Publication
of information materials periodically for dissemination
of diabetes management and care.
-
Establishment
of bi-annual workshop, seminars, and training for
diabetes care team.
-
Acknowledgment
and observance of World Diabetes Day as directed by the
IDF through WHO, which comes up on November 14 of every
year.
-
Input
into the annual budgetary allocation of diabetes
treatment and procurement of drugs and other reagents by
the State Health Ministry or other related parastatal.
